The Versatility of the Tunic: From Top to Dress and Back Again
Take advantage of the stylish versatility of a tunic this season. A commonplace garment dating back to Ancient Rome and Greece, this style rocks today’s runways and can be worn three different ways: as a top, a tunic, and a dress. Tunics are flattering to most body types and may be easily dressed up or worn casual. Follow these tips from Corset Personal Stylists and you’ll be tuning into tunics in no time.
Tips to buying tunics:
• Tunics are simple, slip-on garments made with or without sleeves. A tunic should fall below the waist to mid-thigh.
• Look for light and airy fabrics to maximize comfort during summer. For cooler months, layer over tees and turtlenecks, or under long jackets, sweaters and wraps.
• Focus on styles that aren’t too tight. A tunic should billow and flow.
Tips on wearing a tunic:
As a top -
• Tuck your tunic into pants or a skirt. Just about every body type can wear a tunic as a top. Make sure the tunic material is thin to avoid adding bulk.
As a tunic -
• Wear your tunic with skinny jeans, leggings, skirts or shorts.
- For a lean silhouette, pair your tunic with leggings. Depending on the cut, jeans can be bulky; leggings offer a sleek alternative.
- If you're wearing a skirt or shorts, make sure the hem is at least a few inches longer than your tunic. And look for a slim cut, such as a pencil skirt.
- If you are wearing wide-leg pants with your tunic, belt it to avoid looking too slouchy.
• The best way to accentuate the shape of a tunic is to wear a belt to cinch the waist. Thicker and/or colorful belts make the best options.
• Pair tall boots or narrow flats with jeans, leggings or a skirt for a polished look.
As a dress –
• For a more fashion-forward edge, wear your tunic as a dress (just make sure it’s long enough!) Belting a tunic will shorten it, so be on the lookout for where the hemline hits.
