Fashion Tips & Advice: Right & Wrong Ways to Mix Patterns
Mixing patterns is definitely a hot trend in ’09, but for the average women the concept can be intimidating.
This trend is exciting and economical because it allows you to look at existing pieces in your wardrobe in brand new ways. Experiment and follow these tips by Corset personal fashion stylist’s to help you switch up your sense of style.
• Wear different pattern types:
- Right Way – Look for very different patterns that won’t compete with each other. For example, mix a large floral with a medium stripe or a small dot. Go for contrast!
- Wrong Way – Mixing just floral patterns or just dots makes it difficult to achieve a cohesive look
• Vary the scale of your patterns:
- Right Way – Pairing large, medium and small patterns together to create balance
- Wrong Way - Wearing two or more large patterns makes the overall look overpowering and wearing two or more small patterns can appear too busy
• Find a base color:
- Right Way – It works best to have one of the colors in either pattern coordinate. For the more experimental type, try adding a third pattern that adds a pop of color that is different than your base.
- Wrong Way – It’s okay when patterns contrast but not when colors clash. Mix and match within the same color family and it’s almost impossible to make a mistake.
