Storm of Controversy: What Not to Wear to Work

There’s a storm of controversy swirling at ESPN and surprisingly, it’s about women’s workplace fashions. Apparently “Pardon the Interruption” Host, Tony Kornheiser, has been suspended due to sarcastic remarks he made about co-worker Hannah Storm’s recent on-air outfit consisting of a red top, plaid short skirt and red boots.

We ignored some of the saucy get-ups we see the guys wearing regularly (pinstripe suits, anyone?) on ESPN and took a look at Hannah Storm’s outfit in question. On one hand, if she wasn’t wearing a bright outfit, a shorter hem, or head-turning sanguine boots, would anyone tune in? It is, after all, a station geared toward guys, and Lord knows they need visual stimulation.

Here’s our breakdown. While we applaud her for making a bold choice, we think she could tweak a few areas. She started with some great individual pieces that, when combined, make for a convoluted recipe. Had she played up one of the pieces in the outfit, she would have looked fashion-forward and polished. Our stylists would recommend combining a pair of black tights and a pair of black boots to streamline the look.

At age 47 (which we were shocked to learn), kudos to Hannah for incorporating fun and feminine looks into her workplace arsenal. Sounds simple, but it’s not easy to do. In fact, we just conducted a survey with PINK Magazine in which businesswomen called the idea of pulling together a working wardrobe a “nightmare” or “like finding armor for battle.” And, while 98% of the women surveyed thought personal style is critical to workplace success, only 60% of them took an active role in making it happen.

For additional tips on cracking the business wear code, read our style blog. Or, email us at for tips of the trade. You’re not alone. We get calls daily from women who are weary from walking the mall in search of good business style and wanting to end the “nightmare.” We wonder when we’ll hear from Hannah.
