Dressing for Success in the Workplace

-- PINK Magazine and Corset Personal Styling ask women to come clean about workplace style --
MINNEAPOLIS (October 13, 2009) – Style is a significant tool in the workplace arsenal when it comes to career success, says a resounding 98 percent of working women. In a survey of young professionals, senior managers, and business owners conducted by PINK Magazine and Corset Personal Styling, which both cater to female professionals, women came clean about the importance of how they look in the office. An under-discussed hot button for many working women, workplace dressing can be difficult, they cited, due to weight/size issues, finding age-appropriate pieces, and having a propensity toward purchasing basic black, leaving some respondents to call the process “a nightmare.”

While over half of these professional women said pulling together an outfit presents a significant challenge and nearly 60 percent say they have “nothing to wear,” one-third said they spend more than three to six weeks annually shopping for, accessorizing, and pulling together their wardrobe. “In today’s corporate culture, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. The good news is whether you’re a vice president or just getting started in your career, female professionals can build a powerful wardrobe at any budget,” says Cynthia Good, editor of Atlanta-based PINK Magazine. “With appearance being key to workplace advancement, women should consider their wardrobe management as business critical as employee, time, or budget management.”

According to the survey, more than 25 percent of CEOs, female executives and business owners admitted to withholding an employee’s promotion or raise because of how she dresses at work.

While some likened a work wardrobe to a uniform necessary for competing in a sport or putting on armor for battle, several of the hundreds of respondents noted:
• the more professional you appear on the outside, the more serious others will take you on the inside
• you must look successful for clients and top management to trust you with their money
• your appearance demonstrates your expectations and tells upper management where you want to be

In addition, the professional women surveyed reveal that traditional department stores are lacking in a few areas, including unappealing dressing rooms in terms of lighting and cleanliness (51 percent) and a lack of help from store associates (43 percent).

“Getting dressed and looking polished should be a no-brainer for female professionals. What busy professional women are realizing is that styling/shopping can be outsourced to a company like Corset; similar to IT, accounting, or legal services to save time, money and stress,” said Carrie Leum, president of Corset, whose national wardrobing service delivers personalized outfits and wearing/pairing tips to women across the U.S. every season. “We help our corporate clients establish their brands and create head-turning looks so they spend less time at the mall and more time growing in their career and personal lives.”

MINNEAPOLIS (October 9, 2009) – The fall fashion season is off to a stylish start for Twin Cities-based Corset Personal Styling. Corset, the national personal styling and warbrobing company based in Hopkins, has been named the Best Personal Stylist in the Twin Cities by Minnesota Monthly in its October 2009 “Best of the Cities” issue. Recognized for their unique approach to wardrobing, Corset offers year-round personal styling services and an onsite styling studio perfect for the busy professional woman, as well as a boutique for shoppers looking to find special pieces to complete or create a unique look.

As part of the win, Corset will be featured in Minnesota Monthly’s “Best of the Cities” fashion show on October 22, 2009 in the Twin Cities. Head-to-toe looks styled by Corset will be showcased throughout the fashion show which will highlight the style winners from the 2009 “Best of the Cities” issue. To celebrate the Best Personal Stylist title with shoppers and styling clients, Corset is offering a chance to win a “walk the runway” modeling opportunity at the “Best of the Cities” fashion show. Models in the making can stop by Corset Boutique & Personal Styling Studio (715 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN 55343) through October 16th to enter to win a chance to model a Corset-styled look in the show. The winning model will also receive the outfit she walks the runway in and two tickets to attend the October 22nd “Best of the Cities” fashion show.

Known for an in-depth personalized styling approach ideal for busy lifestyles, Corset Personal Styling puts significant emphasis on client needs, seasonal trends and body shape to create stylish looks that give clients a fashionable edge in their careers and personal lives. “We are honored to be named Best Personal Stylist by Minnesota Monthly and we are excited to share this distinction with our clients and shoppers by offering a chance to take part in the “Best of the Cities” fashion show as a Corset-styled model,” said Carrie Leum, president and owner of Corset, which has been personalizing and sending seasonal wardrobes to busy women across the country since 2007. “At Corset, we work hard to deliver head-turning looks that help our clients build a thoughtful closet. Our talented Corset styling team is focused on creating unique and completely personalized looks for our hometown clients in the Twin Cities and across the country.”

Minneapolis-based Corset client and busy business executive, Georgine Madden, has experienced first-hand the personalized styling guidance that Corset provides styling clients. “Corset not only makes me feel like a million bucks, but they are helping me save money too. In the past, as a shopper, I would find a great jacket or pair of pants, but when I got home I wouldn’t have anything to pair them with. As a result, I would end up with a lot of great pieces, but not thoughtful head-to-toe outfits. Corset sends me completely styled outfits that mix and match, so I always have a grab and go look to feel terrific in.”

Minnesota Monthly’s “Best of the Cities” issue recognizes the editorial team’s favorite finds of 2009. The publication’s annual issue highlights the top services and products offered by companies and individuals in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in the categories of play, shop, dine and hire. Corset’s Best Personal Stylist honor is part of the issue’s shop category.
